In 2019, Viviana Figuero’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer at just 41 years old. A dedicated runner and marathoner, she suddenly found herself in a different kind of race—one against cancer. Under the expert care of Dr. David Anderson and the team at Mount Sinai’s Dubin Breast Center, she faced chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation with unwavering resilience.

For Viviana, running had always been a source of strength, and throughout her treatment, she held onto the hope that she would one day return to the sport she loved. Four years later, she has not only returned—she is thriving. Viviana ran the New York City Half Marathon, marking her third marathon post-treatment. Every step she takes is a testament to perseverance, hope, and the power of expert care.

Beyond her personal journey, Viviana is passionate about spreading awareness of the importance of early detection. “I wanted to tell my story so the next person diagnosed won’t feel like cancer is a death sentence,” she says. “That’s what I felt when they dropped the C word into my world. But I was lucky enough to land in the right place, in the right hands, and I am 100% cancer-free now for four years.”

Featured on News 12 with @drelisaport, she encourages others to take charge of their health and get regular screenings, knowing firsthand how early detection can save lives. As she crosses the finish line this weekend, Viviana runs not just for herself, but for every person facing a cancer diagnosis—proving that nothing, not even cancer, can stop her stride.

When diagnosed with #COVID19 in March 2020, Pastor Benjamin Thomas spent over 100 days at The Mount Sinai Hospital – 54 days on a ventilator and six weeks in a coma. Dr. Robin Varghese, Director of Cardiovascular Critical Care for the Mount Sinai Health System, had been instrumental in saving his life. Finally on July 2, 2020, Pastor Thomas was able to go home and later return to his church in Queens where has been a pastor for 30 years.

COVID-19 took an incredible toll on his lungs – and years later doctors told him he needed a lung transplant due to the severity of his lung injury known as “COVID fibrosis,” which is severe scarring of the lungs. It’s a pattern doctors have seen across the country 5 years post-pandemic.

In 2023, Pastor Thomas received a single-lung transplant after waiting 7 months, performed by Dr. Scott Scheinin, Director for Lung Failure and Transplantation for the Mount Sinai Health System. His recovery has been lengthy and challenging, but he no longer needs oxygen, and is now able to walk and drive. Last year, Pastor Thomas was able to watch his daughter graduate from college which was an emotional experience for him to attend. He also has the stamina to stand up in front of his congregation and lead services again. He is beyond grateful for his life-saving care.
